14 Fun Ways to Stay Active While Traveling
Wanting to stay active while traveling? This article is for you!
But before we dive in, remember that there is no perfect way to enjoy a trip. So if you’re dream vacation is lounging poolside with a cocktail or racing friends on kayaks, what’s most important is making memories your way. Because laughing, good sleep, and relaxation can be just as good for the soul as working out.
So if you’re dream holiday includes action-packed activities, here are 14 fun ways to break a sweat or to keep your body moving while away from home.
Enjoy the Elements
1. Aquatic Adventures: Grab your sunscreen and bathing suit for some fun in the sun! With possibilities ranging from swimming and kayaking to paddle boarding and snorkeling. Want to learn something new? Sign up for white river rafting, water skiing, scuba diving, or surfing!
2. Winter Wonderland: More interested in layering up to hit the slopes? Feel the fresh powdery snow while skiing, snowboarding, snow shoeing, or tubing. Looking for a family-friendly activity? Try ice-skating, sledding, or even a good old fashioned snowball fight!
3. Move in Nature: You don’t need the mountains to soak in beautiful scenery. But let’s be honest, they’re pretty hard to resist. So whether you’re heading up a steep incline in hiking boots or staying on flat land in a national park or a nearby trail, there is so much to see.
Make It an Experience
4. Go on a Walking Tour: See the city from a local’s perspective while learning history along the way. Not sure where to start? Most cities have their own local tour companies. With larger cities typically having options like Airbnb Experiences, Get Your Guide, Free Tours by Foot, and GuruWalk as well.
5. Book an Activity: Whether you’re wanting to try something new or repeat an all-time favorite, excursions are always a popular choice. So check your destination for a theme park, ropes course, golf outing, horseback riding, trampoline park, ziplining, rock climbing, museum, and more.
Live Like a Local
6. Head to the Park: Lace up your sneakers for a walk or run at a local park. You’ll not only get steps in, but a lay of the land in ways you might not have otherwise. Like with all travel, be aware of your surroundings. And for extra safety, go for your run or walk when it’s light out so others are exercising nearby.
7. Pedal to the Metal: See all of the major tourist attractions and hidden gems in a fraction of the time by renting a bike. Need some inspiration? Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Tokyo, Portland, Montreal, and Rio De Janeiro are some of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. So you’ll fit right in!
8. Take a Class: Support local business by registering for a class at a studio in town. From yoga, dance, and total body to spin, boxing, and tai chi, the list goes on and on. Including unique finds like aerial yoga, aqua cycling, and trampoline cardio. Or pole dancing, pound drumming, and indoor surfing.
Sweat It Out
9. Hit the Court or Field: Calling all sports fans! Grab your travel crew and play basketball, tennis, soccer, racquetball, football, frisbee, or volleyball at your hotel or a nearby park. For those flying, ask your accommodation if they have gear you can use to save space in your suitcase.
10. Fitness for Free: YouTube has thousands of free workouts in just about every category. Ranging from stretching to cardio sessions with no equipment needed. So to make your search easier, I put together a list of some of the awesome videos you can find on the platform. Just tap here to give it a read!
11. Gym Pass: If you’re a member of a gym with multiple locations, there might be a site in your destination city as well. If you find one within reach, check with the company to see if they offer day or week passes. And if so, what the pricing would look like based on your membership.
Use What You’ve Got
12. Packable Equipment: Bring the gym to your room with travel-friendly workout gear like sliders, resistance tubes, resistance bands, or a jump rope. Don’t have space in your suitcase? Use your body weight or items like your backpack for strength exercises. Then socks or towels for sliders!
13. Steps on Repeat: If the building you’re staying in has stairs, you can run or walk up and down for some serious cardio. As this workout targets your lower body, it’s recommended to start out slow for short increments of time. Because being too sore to go out and enjoy your trip would not be fun!
14. Hotel Fitness Center: A great option for those who enjoy staying active on an elliptical, treadmill, or with free weights. If you enjoy a specific piece of equipment, give the hotel a call before booking to make sure it’s available. Also, to ask about the fitness center hours if you have a tight schedule.
